What is a waterfall worktop?
A waterfall worktop is a real design statement for your kitchen. The worktop extends over the side of the counter all the way down to the floor. This worktop looks as though it has seamlessly flowed over the side, hence the name ‘waterfall.’
Where do you put one?
A waterfall worktop is designed for the end of a run of furniture or for the end of an island. For an island, you can choose to have the feature on both ends or just the one. A breakfast bar underneath the waterfall worktop looks really stunning.
Is there a benefit to having one?
Well, how good it looks, of course! A waterfall worktop looks sleek and contemporary, working beautifully in a modern kitchen design. You don’t have to choose a patterned or veined worktop, but it looks so good if you do and continue the vein or pattern over the side.
We love the simplicity of the waterfall worktop and what an impact it has on your kitchen design. It is beautifully uncluttered and elegant, creating such a lovely, seamless flow from the worktop to the floor.
You can play with the thickness of your worktop as well to suit the style of the kitchen. A slim quartz might be best for a more classic kitchen, but you could opt for a real slab of stone or concrete to make a bolder statement.

Any downsides?
There are no downsides, but the right material choice and installation skills are essential.
Natural stone, engineered stone or concrete are the most common, and we think they create the best aesthetic, but you could use wood or a laminate.
For practicality and aesthetics, we would recommend an engineered stone or concrete. These are robust materials that will stand up to being knocked and scuffed, whereas wood is going to mark quite easily, and laminate won’t have the robustness or really high-end look you’re trying to achieve.
Achieving the perfect join and seamless pattern continuation takes experienced designers and fitters; this is not an element you want to skimp on and try to measure or install yourself. It’s a job for the professionals, and you’ll be so glad you sat back and let them do it when you run your hands over the finished piece!
If you are after a more traditional-style kitchen, a waterfall worktop won’t look quite right. They are more at home in modern and very contemporary designs. For a traditional kitchen, look at tongue and groove panelling or a butcher’s block end if you want to add a more designed element to the end of your island or countertop.
