Stylish Family Home

  • Modern shaker kitchen, Dormansland by Kitchens Bespoke

About This Project

Previously, this kitchen was white with dark granite worktops, and the clients wanted a big refresh of the design and style to create something more contemporary, but that would work with the black AGA, their new black fridge freezer and the existing floor.

Our bespoke kitchen design

Getting the balance right to deliver the contemporary aesthetic the clients wanted to achieve while working around the more traditional farmhouse style of the AGA was a great design challenge for us.

To meet the brief, we designed a handleless, open-plan kitchen with a central island in a two-tone scheme. The low units are true handleless in Farrow and Ball’s Pitch Black with stainless steel rails. The wall units are oak with a modern shaker-style door.

The oak and painted black doors work so well together here, bringing in a fresh, contemporary style. However, the oak has great warmth and texture to it, giving a little nod to a more traditional style door that you might expect to see in a large family kitchen with an AGA. Using oak for the wall units also breaks up the dominance of black, creating more of a family kitchen rather than being too minimalist or austere.

The breakfast pantry and island also have solid oak worktops, which carry that warmth and texture across the scheme. The island features an open-slatted end unit, and these details all serve as little nods to more classic kitchen styles but do not detract from the overall contemporary aesthetic.

The quartz worktops are Konigstone Calacatta Modena with 300ml upstands. This quartz has stunning deep grey veins running through it, which look luxurious and complement the low black units perfectly. The 300ml upstand is not only practical but really highlights the veining in the quartz, which we love.

To help integrate the AGA into the modern kitchen design, we replaced the cooker hood above it with a Falmec and designed bespoke storage to incorporate the new fridge freezer. To complete the set of new appliances, the kitchen now has a BORA Classic 2.0 down draft extraction hob, two NEFF Slide n’Hide ovens (and we’ve had glowing reports of the sourdough being made in these!) and a Quooker Flex in black.

All in the detail

Neatly concealed behind the breakfast pantry cupboard is a removable panel housing the electric meters for the swimming pool and solar panels. This ensures they are accessible but tucked out of sight and out of the way.

To further accentuate the clean lines of this kitchen design, we removed the tall radiator and instead incorporated a plumbed-in plinth heater for when the AGA is turned off or if more warmth is needed in cold weather for such a large kitchen.
