About This Project

The Brief

I just want a nice kitchen!‘ was the starting point when we met this customer. Well that we can help with! Following a personal recommendation from a previous customer to come to us, we were given a very open brief. There was a simple wishlist; a breakfast bar, space for a dining table and chairs, a range cooker and American style fridge freezer. For the overall concept, the request was to make the kitchen feel very light. To achieve maximum practical space and light, we designed a modern shaker kitchen for this family home.

This kitchen is for a young family and parents that like to throw a party, you may have spotted the speakers in the ceiling and the contents of the pantry! So our starting point for the design was something that worked for a busy family and served as an elegant backdrop for entertaining friends.

Our bespoke kitchen design for a modern shaker kitchen

The resulting kitchen is a beautifully simple and elegant Shaker style with lay on doors, painted in Farrow & Ball, Elephant’s breath. This colour gives a very subtle warmth to the furniture but retains a feeling of light and space.  Crofts and Assinder handles in American copper complete the classic style perfectly.

To further enhance the feeling of light, we used glass fronted tall and wall units with interior lighting fitted. This bounces more light around the room and creates a lovely ambience in the evening.

With the building being converted from an old stable block, the room dimensions are atypical to modern houses.  The kitchen in this house is actually very long and narrow, requiring clever design to create a sense of space.  Our customers had discussed the idea of a kitchen island but just didn’t think they had the space for one. We disagreed!

We designed a bespoke slimline pantry, perfect for a stylish drinks & glassware cabinet, and an island which is slimmer in width than common dimensions. It may be slimmer than some islands but being over 4m in length, there is no compromise on workspace! The island is actually integral to the design and balance of the kitchen, and houses the all important Bertazzoni range. For a family that really loves to cook and entertain, the island also houses a combi oven and Caple wine fridge. The final touch is the Konigstone Quartz worktop which is used across the whole kitchen and retains that light and elegant feel.

All in the detail

To reinforce the feeling of elegance and simplicity, the design is kept largely symmetrical. From the window you have the sink, range and pantry cupboard that all line up perfectly.  Everything is symmetrical off that point. This creates a great aesthetic balance to the room.

Our stylish circular breakfast bar is situated right by the fabulous American style fridge freezer, perfect for breakfast on the go! With this design, there is ample space for a breakfast bar at one end of the kitchen and the sought after dining area at the other.  Because the kitchen is so long and narrow, we also incorporated a built in a built in fridge at the other end of the island from the American fridge freezer. This means that whilst the family is prepping food or entertaining, they have easy access to cold storage at either end of the space.

To make our modern shaker kitchen bang up to date, our extraction hood is by our favourite, Falmec and combination tap is of course, Quooker.
