About This Project

Brief

This is a lovely, characterful home with beautiful period features, but with the kitchen and dining room in separate rooms. Our customers came to us to help them create a new open-plan kitchen-diner and a kitchen set up to host family gatherings, entertain, and kitted out for an Italian who loves to cook!

Our bespoke kitchen design

The house is a traditional tile-hung family home with original fireplaces, cornices and wonderful high ceilings, so our clients were keen to accentuate the character with a timeless in-frame shaker kitchen. This in-frame kitchen actually features concealed hinges and soft close doors, and rather than oak drawer boxes, we used Ambia-Line by Blum for internal dividers. These are more modern in style and offer more choices in dividers and slots for drawer organisation.

For the colour scheme (which we are obsessed with!), the client wanted a synergy between the new kitchen and the rest of the home and worked with Katherine Richards, a fantastic local interior designer, to specify the colours. The kitchen island is ‘Aubern Falls,’ the main run of furniture is ‘Khaki Green’ and the walls are ‘Subtle Ivory,’ all from Dulux. The aged brass bar handles are the perfect addition to this colour scheme.

The worksurfaces are Konigstone quartz; the island is in Konigstone Alba with a shark nose detail, and for the main sink run, we used Konigstone Ontario, which has a lovely soft marble pattern.

This kitchen is loaded with Miele appliances, including an oven, combi oven and warming drawer, integrated fridge freezer and dishwasher, plus a flush-fitted BORA Classic induction hob with downdraft extraction, The 1810 Company sink clad in the Ontario quartz, under-counter Dunavox wine fridge and a Quooker Cube tap in black.

All in the detail

One of the period features in this kitchen to accommodate was the chimney stack. It had been used previously to house the range cooker. Our customers knew they didn’t want a range for the new kitchen, so Rachael designed a bespoke oven housing within the chimney stack for the two Miele ovens and warming drawer. The ovens are at a more practical height and slot perfectly into this spot.

The original plan for this kitchen was to create an open-plan kitchen-diner by taking out the wall between the two rooms, but as we finalised the design with the clients, we suggested not taking out the whole wall but creating a wide square archway instead. This would complement the character of the room, still deliver an open plan feel, but also provide a natural divide between the two spaces. The clients loved this idea, and it now frames both sides of the room beautifully.

This was a full-service project, and we worked alongside the building firm to deliver additional works alongside the kitchen installation. We took care of the underfloor heating across the whole ground floor, including the screeding ready for the real-wood parquet flooring to be installed and took care of the coving and decorating.
